Seattle Seahawks’ star receiver is making news for his game-winning plays on and off the field. Tyler Lockett’s athleticism is a combination of master strategy and pure talent. However, he credits much of his success to his faith and keeping God #1.

His latest life-changing play, is a new book of poems titled, “Reflection” that releases this Tuesday, October 15th.

“In the world that we live in today, sometimes it’s hard to see ourselves the way that we should see ourselves or if you are a believer, the way that God sees us. It’s easy to be caught up in the money, fame, power, love and praise from other people and that can really cloud our judgement. [Especially], when we’re looking for someone or something to make us happy rather than being happy inwardly. And so with this book, it’s me talking about all these things that is clouding my judgement and stopping me from seeing [my purpose] and who I really am inside. The more I talk about these things [and bring it to light], the more I can finally see myself in the mirror the way God sees me.” - Tyler Lockett, DangerTalk Podcast with Russell Wilson

In a separate interview with ESPN's Adam Schefter, Lockett goes more in depth about the book and overall collection of poetries. However, it was the poem in his anticipated second installment “Therapy” that caught the attention of the podcast host.

“Life is so much better when people are there for me, it’s therapy

It helps me open up before I allow my thoughts to bury me

Unconditional love is the very thing that carries me

And every time I fall short, I thank God he’s there to carry me

But lately, I’ve been having so much weight on my shoulders

Which makes me wonder how much can God carry as I get older

Because the thoughts I have can get scary

When I think about the things I’ve done, I realize that they’re no longer buried

Because I bring it back to date

And I’m stressed now, And I’m realizing this is my biggest test now

And when I open up, I see that I’m a mess now

So how is it that I’m gonna show the world my best now

Can you help me doc before I break down

I got people depending on me, I can’t let down

Plus I’m a virgin and I’m yearning and I want sex now.

But if I do I it, I’ll know I’ll have regrets now…”

- Excerpt from “Therapy”

This excerpt is a window into the conversations between someone sharing their vulnerability with possibly a therapist or friend, touching on the importance of mental health and therapy. The piece is potent with creativity and true authenticity that is relevant regardless of age, race or upbringing. But behind the verse, Lockett reveals that he and his girlfriend both have goals to wait for marriage before engaging in sex. Causing a stir and array of questions amongst his peers and sports fans, Lockett explains that it is a choice that he holds close to his heart. Though physical intimacy between 2 mature and in love adults is enjoyable, he believes it is best when experiencing within the context of marriage. It’s admirable to hear a young man freely speak on faith and sexuality with the courage to uphold Godly principles in his relationship. It’s good to also note purity comes from the heart not just what we do and stay away from. His collections from “Reflection” and “Therapy” both highlight the oneness and alignment that’s needed between our thoughts, actions and beliefs to live with wholeness and freedom.
