Black Music Appreciation Month

Black Music Appreciation Month (1).png

This month of June is recognized as Black Music Appreciation Month so we’d like to celebrate the growth and impact Gospel music has in Black culture. The unique sound touches the hearts of many by providing a way for listeners to connect to God and sing their praises unto Him. As Gospel music slowly became a more popular genre, we have seen many artists push the envelope on what Gospel music means to them. Evolving from the traditional hymnal sound to the fast stomp and clap pace of the choir, to blending soft acoustic notes found in CCM, Black Gospel artists have always created a new sound with their own twist.

The iconic anointed artistry of The Clark Sisters, Shirley Ceasar, Dottie Peoples, Andre Crouch, Kirk Franklin, The Winans, Yolanda Adams, and Walter Hawkins (and the list can go on!) paved the way for future artists to come. The worship in their music inspired lives of believers in the church and not as their legendary hits topped the Gospel and Billboard charts.

Now in the Gospel industry, we see fresh and upcoming artists that create music that bridges the gap between generations. From Jekalyn Carr, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and Bri Babineaux who can belt out passionate melodies up and down the scales, to the hip hop vibe inspired Lecrae, Mali Music, and Canton Jones that reaches the cool, cultured, millennial. Each have a special and unique gift in the body of Christ and influence in the lives of many across denominations, races, and ethnicities.

Here’s to the discography of Black Gospel culture!

- Morgan Phillips

Morgan Phillips has been a follower of Christ her entire life. She was exposed to His word at a young age and has been an active member of her church. Outside of church, she gained a passion for portrait photography. She loves to use her God-given talents to create moments that will last forever. "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 2:11. She believes as long as she stays within God's will she will prosper to be the woman he created her to be.
